As of 4 September 2025, a business in Bangladesh that wants to bank online usually opens a current account with a scheduled bank and uses that bank internet and mobile banking, rather than a pure app only neobank. Bangladesh Bank created a digital bank framework and granted early licences to entities including Nagad Digital Bank and Kori Digital, but the programme was disrupted and reopened for fresh applications, so a widely available standalone digital business account is still emerging. Mobile financial services such as bKash, Nagad and Rocket add collection and merchant payment tools on top of the bank account.

What online business banking means in Bangladesh now

For most companies the practical setup is a current account at a scheduled commercial bank, operated through that bank internet banking portal and mobile app, with electronic transfers sent over BEFTN and RTGS and instant transfers over NPSB. This is online banking in the sense of digital access to a conventional account, not a branchless neobank built only as an app. The account itself still follows standard onboarding, including a trade license, e-TIN, and company documents. Digital banks and the licensing position

Bangladesh Bank introduced a digital bank framework and selected early applicants, with licences associated with Nagad Digital Bank and Kori Digital. The rollout was then disrupted, and in 2025 the central bank reopened the process with revised guidelines, stricter sponsor checks, and a higher minimum paid up capital requirement, after which a fresh round of entities applied. Because of this stop and restart, a fully digital business current account from a licensed digital bank is not yet broadly established for ordinary businesses. Mobile financial services and where they fit

Mobile financial services such as bKash, Nagad and Rocket are widely used, and they offer merchant and payment acceptance products that help a business collect from customers. A personal mobile wallet is not a replacement for a business current account, so the common pattern is a scheduled bank account for core banking and an MFS merchant account for collections. Check the current merchant products, limits, and charges with the provider.

Cross border and foreign currency online

Holding foreign currency is restricted in Bangladesh because cross border flows run under exchange control through authorised dealer banks, and eligibility is tied to things such as export earnings. Some exporters and freelancers use international online providers to collect from clients abroad, within the rules set by Bangladesh Bank. Confirm what your business is permitted to do with your authorised dealer bank before relying on any online cross border tool.

How to compare online options

  1. Decide whether you need a transactional current account, a collection and merchant tool, or both, since most firms use a combination.
  2. Compare the internet and mobile banking features, transfer rails, and charges across scheduled banks, not just the headline of being digital.
  3. Verify any digital bank or foreign currency claim directly with the provider and Bangladesh Bank, as the rules and the licensing position are still moving.

Can a Bangladesh business open an online account that holds foreign currency?
