As of 12 February 2026, a non resident cannot simply open a resident business current account in Bangladesh. The taka is managed under exchange control, so non residents use specific regulated routes through authorised dealer banks. To invest, a non resident Bangladeshi or foreign national opens a Non Resident Investors Taka Account, which converts inward foreign currency into taka and allows free remittance of dividends and sale proceeds abroad. To hold foreign currency, a person abroad opens a Foreign Currency or Non Resident Foreign Currency Deposit account, with a minimum such as USD 1,000 or GBP 500 for an individual and about USD 25,000 for a foreign organisation or investor. A foreign owned company that incorporates in Bangladesh runs an ordinary current account once registered. Confirm the right route with the bank.

The routes for non residents

Which account fits depends on what the non resident is doing. Investing in shares or a venture points to a NITA. Holding foreign currency abroad points to an FC or NFCD account. Running an active business in Bangladesh points to incorporating a local entity and opening a normal current account in its name. Each route is governed by Bangladesh Bank rules and runs through an authorised dealer bank. As of 12 February 2026.

Non Resident Investors Taka Account

A NITA converts inward foreign currency into taka so a non resident can invest in Bangladesh, for example by buying shares. The balance, including dividends and sale proceeds, is freely remittable abroad in foreign exchange. It is opened with an authorised dealer bank using funds remitted from abroad through normal banking channels. Verify the current rules with the bank.

Foreign Currency accounts opened from abroad

A person residing abroad can open a private FC or NFCD account by sending the required papers, verified by a Bangladesh mission abroad or a reputable bank, to an authorised dealer in Bangladesh. The minimum to open is about USD 1,000 or GBP 500 or equivalent for an individual, and about USD 25,000 or equivalent for a foreign person, organisation, or investor. As of 12 February 2026, confirm the documents and minimums with the bank.
