The documents you need to open a business account in Bulgaria depend on your legal form and the provider. A sole trader or freelancer gives proof of self employed status, identification, and proof of address. A limited company, the EOOD or OOD, gives a Commercial Register extract, its unified identification code, identification for the owners and beneficial owners, and source of funds information requested under anti money laundering rules. A brand new company first opens a capital accumulation account to record its share capital, then converts it into an operating account after registration. Foreign owned companies are often asked for notarised and translated documents. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Confirm the exact list with the provider before you apply.

What banks and providers in Bulgaria ask for

Bulgarian banks and licensed providers must verify who you are, who owns the business, and where your money comes from before they open a business account. The exact paperwork varies by legal form and by provider, but the categories are consistent. As of 25 June 2026.

Sole traders and the self employed

A sole trader or freelancer usually provides proof of registered self employed status or business registration, a valid passport or national identity card, proof of address, and a description of the business activity. Where the business is registered for VAT, the VAT registration number is also requested. Source of funds questions still apply.

Limited companies, the EOOD and OOD

A limited company provides a recent extract from the Commercial Register, its unified identification code, the articles of association, and identification and proof of address for every owner, director, and beneficial owner. A new company first opens a capital accumulation account at a traditional bank to pay in its share capital, which can be a token amount for an EOOD, collects the deposit confirmation, registers in the Commercial Register, then converts the account into a full operating account. Foreign owned companies are often asked for notarised and translated company documents and a fuller source of funds file, and traditional banks may charge a one time KYC review fee of roughly EUR 100 to EUR 500. As of 25 June 2026.

A common document checklist

A common checklist of documents to open a business account in Bulgaria is below, as of 25 June 2026. Verify with the provider

  • Proof of the business: a Commercial Register extract and unified identification code for a company, or proof of self employed status for a sole trader, plus the VAT registration number where the business is VAT registered.
  • Identification for every owner, director, and authorised signatory, usually a passport or national identity card, plus proof of address.
  • For a new limited company, a capital accumulation account and a deposit confirmation for the share capital, plus source of funds information; foreign owned companies are often asked for notarised and translated documents.

How to prepare your documents

  1. Confirm your legal form, a sole trader, an EOOD, or an OOD, because the document list and the capital step differ.
  2. Gather business registration proof, identification and proof of address for all owners and beneficial owners, and a clear source of funds explanation.
  3. Check the provider current list before you apply, and arrange notarised translations early if the company or owners are foreign, because this is often the slowest step.
