Snapshot

Indonesia does not offer an open multi currency wallet held in rupiah for businesses. The rupiah is managed and foreign exchange follows Bank Indonesia rules. Local banks offer foreign currency, or valas, company accounts in currencies such as USD, and international providers such as Airwallex and Payoneer add cross border collection and payouts. Airwallex can issue an Indonesian rupiah account number, but under local rules money received in Indonesia is not held in IDR and is converted to a currency you choose.

General information, not financial, legal, or tax advice. Verify current terms and eligibility with the provider before applying.

As of 6 June 2026, Indonesia does not offer the open multi currency wallet that businesses use in some markets. The rupiah is managed and foreign exchange follows Bank Indonesia rules, so a company holds foreign currency in a dedicated foreign currency account, known locally as a valas account, at a bank such as BCA, Mandiri, or BNI. For cross border collection and payouts, international providers such as Airwallex and Payoneer sit alongside the local account. Confirm current terms and any documentation requirements with the provider.

How holding foreign currency works in Indonesia

The rupiah is managed and Bank Indonesia oversees foreign exchange, so a business cannot simply hold balances in many currencies in one open wallet. Instead, a registered company opens a foreign currency account, known as a valas account, to hold currencies such as USD. Conversions and outward transfers generally need supporting documentation under foreign exchange rules. As of 6 June 2026, confirm the current position with your bank.

Foreign currency accounts at local banks

BCA, Mandiri, and BNI offer valas accounts to registered companies. These are used to receive export proceeds and pay overseas suppliers in the account currency. Minimum balances and administrative fees apply and vary by bank, so verify the current figures before you apply. As of 6 June 2026.

International multi currency providers

Airwallex offers a business account that can include an Indonesian rupiah account number, but under local regulation money received in Indonesia is not held in IDR and is converted into a currency you choose. Airwallex reports no account opening fee or monthly maintenance as of 6 June 2026. Payoneer holds balances in its receiving currencies and pays out to an Indonesian bank account. Both work alongside a local rupiah account rather than replacing it. Verify current terms with each provider.

What to use for receiving from abroad

Businesses that mainly need to receive money from clients or marketplaces abroad often use Payoneer or Airwallex to collect in foreign currency and then pay out to their Indonesian account. These are receiving and payout tools that complement the regulated bank accounts above. As of 6 June 2026.
