Snapshot

In Egypt a business holds foreign currency through a domiciliary account at a licensed bank, typically in US dollars, euros, and pounds sterling, rather than a single multi currency wallet. As of 7 January 2026 these accounts accept SWIFT wires, conversion to Egyptian pounds happens at the bank's rate, and banks may ask for invoices or other documents that explain the purpose before approving a foreign currency transfer. Trading foreign currency outside accredited banks is a criminal offence under the Central Bank law.

A business in Egypt manages more than one currency through a domiciliary foreign currency account at a licensed bank, most often in US dollars, euros, or pounds sterling, rather than through a single multi currency wallet of the kind some international providers offer. As of 7 January 2026 these accounts accept SWIFT wires, conversion to Egyptian pounds happens at the bank's rate on the day, and banks may ask for invoices or a stated purpose before approving a foreign currency transfer under Central Bank of Egypt rules. Trading foreign currency outside accredited banks and licensed entities is a criminal offence under the Central Bank law. Confirm the available currencies and terms with the bank.

How foreign currency accounts work in Egypt

Egyptian banks offer domiciliary accounts that let a company hold and receive foreign currency, commonly US dollars, euros, and pounds sterling, and receive SWIFT wires into them. This is the usual route to multi currency operations rather than a single wallet that switches between many currencies. As of 7 January 2026 the Central Bank of Egypt guarantees the right to retain foreign currency received, owned, or possessed, and permits transfer into and out of the country through accredited banks and licensed entities. Conversion and documentation

When foreign currency is converted to Egyptian pounds, the bank typically applies its own rate on the day of the transaction, and the spread is not always disclosed in advance. For outgoing foreign currency payments, banks may require a document that explains the purpose, such as an invoice, before approving the transfer. As of 7 January 2026 plan for these checks when timing international payments, and ask the bank how it sets its rate and what evidence it needs.

The currency position to weigh

Egypt has gone through periods of tight foreign currency liquidity, which at times made US dollar transfers and US dollar cash costly and limited. As of 7 January 2026 conditions can change with central bank policy, so confirm current availability, limits, and pricing for foreign currency transactions directly with the bank before you rely on them. Trading foreign currency outside accredited banks and licensed entities is a criminal offence under the Central Bank law, so keep foreign currency activity within licensed channels.

We do not list a business account that is confirmed available to companies registered in Egypt as of 7 January 2026. Egyptian banks such as Banque Misr, the National Bank of Egypt, and Commercial International Bank set their own onboarding requirements under Central Bank of Egypt rules, and most international account providers do not offer a full local corporate account to Egypt registered companies. Payoneer is available in Egypt for receiving cross border payments and withdrawing to a local bank, but it is not a replacement for a domestic business account.
