How business banking works in Bahrain

Business banking in Bahrain is led by local banks supervised by the Central Bank of Bahrain, the single regulator for the financial sector. The market includes conventional banks such as National Bank of Bahrain, Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait, and Ahli United Bank, Islamic banks such as Bahrain Islamic Bank, Al Salam Bank, and Kuwait Finance House Bahrain, and international banks such as HSBC and Citibank that serve corporate clients. A company normally needs a valid Commercial Registration before any bank will open an account, and since May 2025 holding a separate business account has been compulsory for registered commercial entities under a Ministry of Industry and Commerce resolution.

Who can open a business account

A Bahrain registered company, including a with limited liability company, a branch of a foreign company, or a sole establishment holding a Commercial Registration, can apply. Banks verify the identity of every shareholder, director, and authorised signatory, request shareholder information for anyone holding 10 percent or more, and may ask for more from companies with overseas owners or higher risk activities.

Traditional banks compared with neobanks

Bahrain is dominated by conventional and Islamic banks with branch networks rather than standalone business neobanks. Bank ABC operates the digital bank ila, but as of 21 March 2026 ila is positioned as a mobile retail bank rather than a confirmed business account provider. Global business neobanks such as Wise and Revolut do not currently offer local business accounts to companies registered in Bahrain. As a result most businesses bank with a local provider, several of which now offer electronic onboarding through the Central Bank of Bahrain platform. Confirm the current digital options with the bank.

Requirements and documents

Most banks in Bahrain ask for a similar core set of documents, as of 21 March 2026. Verify with the provider

  • A valid Commercial Registration certificate from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, plus the memorandum and articles of association for the company.
  • Identification for every shareholder, director, and authorised signatory, a board resolution authorising the account, and shareholder information for anyone holding 10 percent or more.
  • Proof of a business address and a company profile describing the activity. Some banks also ask for expected turnover or an initial deposit, and a minimum balance may apply.

How to open an account

  1. Confirm your Commercial Registration is active and gather the company and owner documents listed above.
  2. Choose a bank that fits your needs, comparing minimum balance, branch access, international payments, and conventional or Islamic banking.
  3. Apply at a branch or through the bank online or electronic know your customer onboarding, complete the checks, and verify current fees and eligibility with the provider before funding the account.
