Switching a business bank account in Bulgaria is a manual process. Unlike a few countries that run a guaranteed switch service, Bulgaria leaves it to you to open the new account, move your incoming payments, standing orders, and any direct debits, update your customers, suppliers, and the tax authority with the new IBAN, then close the old account once nothing else relies on it. The safest approach is to run both accounts in parallel for a short period so no payment is missed. Since Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, both accounts are in euro, which removes any currency conversion from the move. Confirm timelines and any closing fees with both providers.

How switching a business account works in Bulgaria

There is no single button that moves a Bulgarian business account from one provider to another. The European rules on a guaranteed switch service are aimed mainly at consumer payment accounts, so a business switch is generally handled by you and the two providers directly. As of 21 October 2025.

What you move

The work is in the detail. You redirect incoming payments from customers and platforms, recreate standing orders and any direct debits on the new account, move card payments and subscriptions, and update your accounting software, payroll, and online payment tools. Because your IBAN changes with the provider, every payer who holds your old details must be updated, including the National Revenue Agency for tax payments and refunds.

What to watch

Run both accounts in parallel until you are sure every recurring payment has moved, then close the old account. Check for a minimum notice period, any unused prepaid plan fees, and whether closing the account affects linked products such as a card, an overdraft, or a loan. Keep statements from the old account for your records and for tax. Confirm the current process and any fees with both providers.

What to check before you open one

Before you switch a business account in Bulgaria, check these points, as of 21 October 2025. Verify with the provider

  • Whether the new provider suits your legal form and needs, and whether it can replace everything the old account does, including cash handling or the capital account if you rely on those.
  • Every incoming payment, standing order, direct debit, card, and subscription tied to the old IBAN, so nothing is missed when you redirect them.
  • Any closing notice period or fees on the old account, and whether closing it affects a linked card, overdraft, or loan.

How to switch step by step

  1. Open and verify the new business account, and confirm it supports your legal form, cash needs, and currency handling.
  2. List every incoming payment and recurring payment on the old account, then recreate them on the new account and update customers, suppliers, payroll, and the National Revenue Agency with the new IBAN.
  3. Run both accounts in parallel for a short period, confirm everything has moved, then close the old account after checking notice periods and any closing fees.

Questions about switching a business account in Bulgaria

Is there an automatic business account switch service in Bulgaria?
No. Bulgaria does not run a guaranteed automatic switch service for business accounts. You open the new account and move incoming payments, standing orders, direct debits, and partners yourself, then close the old account. As of 21 October 2025. Confirm the process with both providers.
Does my IBAN change when I switch business account in Bulgaria?
Yes. The IBAN belongs to the account at a specific provider, so it changes when you move to a new provider. Everyone who pays you, including customers, platforms, and the National Revenue Agency, must be updated with the new IBAN. As of 21 October 2025.
How long does it take to switch a business account in Bulgaria?
It is commonly two to six weeks end to end, driven less by opening the new account and more by how many incoming payments, standing orders, and partners you need to move. Running both accounts in parallel for a short period helps avoid missed payments. As of 21 October 2025.
Will switching cost anything in Bulgaria?
It can. Opening the new account is often free, but the old account may have a minimum notice period, unused prepaid plan fees, or charges linked to closing products such as a card or overdraft. Check both providers fee schedules before you switch. As of 21 October 2025.
