How Bacs works
Bacs, which stands for Bankers Automated Clearing Services, is a United Kingdom payment system used to process large volumes of electronic payments. Rather than settling each payment instantly, Bacs collects payments into batches and processes them over a standard three working day cycle: the file is submitted on the first day, processed by the banks on the second, and the funds clear on the third working day. This makes Bacs well suited to predictable, routine payments rather than time critical ones. The two main Bacs payment types are direct debit and direct credit, current as of 4 February 2026.
Direct debit and direct credit
Bacs carries two main kinds of payment. A direct debit lets a business collect money from a customer's account on agreed dates, with the customer's authorisation, and is widely used for subscriptions, utility bills, and other recurring charges. A direct credit, sometimes called a Bacs Direct Credit or bank transfer, pushes money out to a recipient and is commonly used by employers to pay salaries and by businesses to pay suppliers. Both follow the three working day cycle, so the timing is predictable but not immediate.
Bacs, Faster Payments, and CHAPS
The United Kingdom has several payment systems for different needs. Bacs handles bulk, routine payments such as salaries and direct debits and clears over three working days. Faster Payments moves most everyday single payments between accounts within seconds, subject to bank limits. CHAPS is used for high value or time critical sterling payments that settle the same working day and usually carries a fee. The right choice depends on the amount, how quickly the payment must arrive, and whether it is a one off or a recurring collection.
