Snapshot

Estonia lets non residents form and run a company online through e-Residency, but e-Residency does not guarantee a bank account. Traditional Estonian banks assess local substance and usually expect an in person visit, so many non resident companies operate on an EEA fintech account instead.

As of 16 December 2025, a non resident can own and run an Estonian company through e-Residency, but a bank account is a separate decision made by each provider. Classic Estonian banks such as LHV, Swedbank and SEB look for a genuine tie to Estonia, economic substance and source of funds, and they generally expect an in person visit, so a company with no local connection is often declined. Most non resident companies use an EEA fintech such as Wise Business or Revolut Business, which an Estonian company may hold anywhere in the EEA. Confirm eligibility with the provider.

What non resident means for an Estonian account

Estonia is unusual because e-Residency lets a non resident form and run an Estonian company fully online. Forming the company and opening a bank account are two separate steps, though. e-Residency gives you a digital identity to manage the company, but each bank or payment institution decides on an account independently. As of 16 December 2025, confirm the current position with the provider.

Why traditional banks often decline

Banks such as LHV, Swedbank and SEB assess ownership, where the company is managed, economic substance and source of funds, and they look for a genuine tie to Estonia. They generally also require an in person visit. A company with no local connection, customers or management in Estonia is therefore often declined, even when the owner holds e-Residency.

The fintech route

Estonian law lets a company hold its business account at a credit or payment institution anywhere in the EEA. Many non resident companies use Wise Business or Revolut Business, which open remotely and support multi currency operations, and some later add an Estonian account once the company builds local substance.

What providers look at

As of 16 December 2025, the points that shape a non resident application include the following. Verify with the provider

  • A genuine connection to Estonia, such as customers, management or activity in the country, for a traditional bank.
  • Beneficial ownership and source of funds, which every provider checks under anti money laundering rules.
  • Whether an in person visit is required, which classic banks often expect and fintechs usually do not.

How to approach it as a non resident

  1. Decide whether you need an Estonian bank account at all, or whether an EEA fintech account meets your needs.
  2. Prepare ownership, company and source of funds documents, since every provider verifies these.
  3. Confirm eligibility and any visit requirement with the provider before you apply, as policy changes.
