Snapshot

Costa Rica has no national automatic account switch service, so moving a business account is a manual project. You open the new account, then move your SINPE and SINPE Movil registration, the account customers pay into, payroll, suppliers and any recurring payments yourself. The safest approach is to run both accounts in parallel until everything has cleared on the new one, then close the old account. Confirm the current steps with both banks.

Costa Rica does not have a national automatic account switch service for businesses, unlike the guaranteed switch services in some other countries. As of 31 December 2025 switching means opening the new account and then moving your SINPE and SINPE Movil registration, the account your customers pay into, your payroll, your suppliers and any recurring payments yourself. The safest approach is to run the old and new accounts side by side until every payment has moved and cleared, then close the old account. Confirm the current steps and any closing requirements with both banks.

How switching works in Costa Rica

Because there is no automatic switch, you manage the move as a project. As of 31 December 2025 you first open the new business account, which follows the usual documents and checks for a registered company. You then redirect each money flow one at a time, starting with incoming customer payments and SINPE Movil, then payroll and suppliers, then any recurring or automatic payments and card terminals. Running both accounts in parallel during the move means a payment that has not been redirected yet still arrives safely in the old account.

What to move

The items that matter most are the ones that bring money in or send it out on a schedule. As of 31 December 2025 that usually means your SINPE and SINPE Movil registration so customers can still pay you, the bank details printed on invoices and shared with customers, payroll for employees, supplier payment instructions, any automatic or recurring payments, and card acceptance or terminals. Update your accounting and invoicing records at the same time so your books match the new account.

Before you close the old account

Keep the old account open until each incoming payment, payroll run and recurring payment has appeared on the new account and cleared. As of 31 December 2025 check there is no remaining balance, no pending transaction and no outstanding fee before you ask the bank to close it, and confirm the bank closing steps so the account is formally closed rather than left dormant. Verify the current process with the bank.

How to switch in order

  1. Open the new business account with the company documents and complete the identity and compliance checks.
  2. Move SINPE and SINPE Movil, incoming customer payments, payroll, suppliers and recurring payments, updating invoices and accounting records as you go.
  3. Run both accounts in parallel until everything has cleared, then confirm there is no remaining balance or fee and close the old account.

Questions about switching in Costa Rica

Is there an automatic account switch service in Costa Rica?
There is no national automatic switch service for business accounts in Costa Rica as of 31 December 2025, unlike the seven day switch service in some other countries. You open the new account and move your SINPE registrations, incoming payments, payroll and recurring payments yourself. Confirm the current options with both banks. This is general information, not advice.
How long does switching a business account take in Costa Rica?
It depends on how many payment relationships you move. Opening the new account can take a few days to a few weeks, and migrating SINPE Movil, customer payments, payroll and suppliers adds more time. As of 31 December 2025 plan to run both accounts in parallel until everything has moved.
What do I need to update when switching banks in Costa Rica?
You update your SINPE and SINPE Movil registration, the account customers pay into, payroll and supplier payment details, any recurring or automatic payments, card terminals and your accounting and invoicing records. As of 31 December 2025 keep the old account open until each item is confirmed on the new one.
Should I close the old business account immediately?
Generally no. It is safer to run both accounts in parallel until all incoming payments, payroll and recurring payments have moved and cleared on the new account, then close the old one and confirm there is no remaining balance or fee. As of 31 December 2025 confirm the closing steps with the bank.
