How switching a business account works in Norway
There is no single national service that picks up your whole banking setup and recreates it at a new bank within a set number of days. Instead you run the move in stages and keep both accounts open during a short overlap so nothing is missed. The company keeps its organisation number throughout, so the task is mostly about changing the account number wherever it is used and recreating the payment agreements that live on the old account.
Before you move
List everything that touches the current account: incoming payments from customers, salary and supplier payments, card payments, AvtaleGiro direct debit agreements, eFaktura electronic invoice agreements, and any payment terminal or accounting software links. Note any notice period or closing fee on the old account, and confirm what onboarding help the new provider offers.
Opening the new account
Open the new business account with the usual documents, including the organisation number, proof of registration with the Brønnøysund Register Centre, and identification for owners and directors. Once it is live you have the new account number you need for every later step.
Moving payments and agreements
AvtaleGiro and eFaktura agreements are linked to the old account and do not transfer on their own. You generally recreate them on the new account and cancel the versions tied to the old one. Set up new salary and supplier payments from the new account, and give the new account number to customers who pay you by transfer. Move any links from your accounting system and payment terminal across as well.
Updating your account number with the Tax Administration
Register the new account number with the Norwegian Tax Administration so that any refund is paid to the right place. You can update the account number for tax refunds through the Tax Administration channels. Confirm the current method, since it can change.
Closing the old account
Keep the old account open until you have confirmed that no payments, direct debits, or invoices are still routing through it. Once it is quiet, settle any balance, observe any notice period, and ask the provider to close it. Keep records of the closure in case a late payment arrives.
