Spain has an account switching service that lets the new bank move standing orders, incoming transfers and direct debits from the old account, and close the old one if you want. The process is generally free and usually expected to complete in about fifteen business days. The main work is the direct debits, the domiciliaciones, since some issuers such as the Agencia Tributaria accept a change of account only from the account holder.

How the switching service works
Spanish banks offer an account switching service that moves the regular activity from one current account to another. You start it at the new bank, which contacts the old bank on your behalf. The old bank is expected to provide the list of standing orders, direct debits and regular incoming transfers from the previous thirteen months, usually within a few days, and the new bank then recreates them. You can also ask for the old account to be closed once everything has moved. The service is generally free. As of 21 January 2026.
The direct debits are the hard part
For a business the domiciliaciones deserve the most attention. Many can move through the switching service, but some issuers only accept a change of account directly from the account holder. The Agencia Tributaria for tax debits and some municipalities for local charges fall into this group, so you usually update the account details with them yourself. Make a list of every recurring debit, including the AEAT and Social Security charges, suppliers and software subscriptions, and confirm each has moved. As of 21 January 2026.
A practical order of steps
- Open the new account and confirm it has the features and any Spanish IBAN your clients and suppliers expect.
- List every incoming payment, standing order and direct debit, including tax and Social Security debits.
- Start the switching service at the new bank to move what it can move automatically.
- Update the issuers that only accept a change from the account holder, such as the Agencia Tributaria and your municipality.
- Keep the old account open until every payment and debit has moved and cleared, then close it.
