Mexico has no single automatic switch that moves a whole business account between banks, as of 11 May 2026. In practice you open the new account, move incoming and outgoing payments to the new CLABE, redirect direct debits and payroll, then close the old account once everything has cleared. A regulated payroll portability process, portabilidad de nómina, exists for salary accounts. Steps and timing vary by bank.
- Automatic full switch
- Not available for business accounts. You run the move yourself across both banks.
- Does the CLABE move
- No. The new account at the new bank has a new CLABE that you must share and update.
- Payroll
- Portabilidad de nómina lets employees move where a salary is deposited.
- Before you close
- Clear pending charges, move direct debits and SPEI payments, then close the old account.

How switching works in Mexico
Unlike some markets that offer a single guaranteed switch that moves an account and its payments in a fixed number of days, Mexico does not provide one automatic switch for a business operating account. The move is something you manage across the old bank and the new bank. The central element is the CLABE, the standardised account number used for SPEI transfers, payroll and direct debits. Because the CLABE belongs to the account at a specific bank, opening a new account means a new CLABE that you have to share with payers and update everywhere it is stored. Plan the move so that income and outgoings shift cleanly and nothing important is left pointing at the old account.
Payments, direct debits and payroll
Incoming payments from clients arrive by SPEI to your CLABE, so each payer needs the new number. Outgoing direct debits, the domiciliación set up for utilities, internet, insurance and similar services, also run from the CLABE and must be re established on the new account. Standing SPEI transfers to suppliers and staff need the new sending account. For salaries there is portabilidad de nómina, a regulated payroll portability process that lets an employee move the bank where a salary is deposited, with the request made at the bank that will receive the payroll. Confirm the current rules with each bank, since processes change.
Tax and records
Update the bank account you use for tax payments and refunds with the SAT, since refunds are paid to a registered CLABE. Keep clear records of the change for your accounting, and make sure invoices and the CFDI electronic invoices you issue continue to reconcile against the right account. Where a step is unclear for your situation, verify it with the provider rather than assuming it will carry over.
What to move before you close
Work through this list before closing the old account, because a missed direct debit or an outdated CLABE is the most common cause of a failed payment. Verify with the provider
- Incoming SPEI payments from clients and marketplaces, updated to the new CLABE, and any card or terminal settlement that pays into the account.
- Outgoing domiciliación direct debits for utilities and services, standing SPEI transfers to suppliers and staff, and payroll through portabilidad de nómina where it applies.
- The bank account registered with the SAT for tax payments and refunds, plus any subscriptions or platforms that hold your old CLABE on file. Confirm there are no pending charges before closing.
How to switch step by step
- Open the new business account and confirm its CLABE, cards and online access work, while keeping the old account open in parallel.
- Move incoming payments to the new CLABE, re establish direct debits and standing SPEI transfers, start payroll portability where relevant, and update the account registered with the SAT.
- Watch both accounts for a full billing cycle, confirm nothing still relies on the old account, then ask the old bank for the closure steps and close it. Verify each step with the provider before finishing.
